Our Client:
Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo – Bespoke Temporary Passenger Lift
Location: Edinburgh Castle Esplanade (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Specialist Solution: World‑first cantilevered modular lift — no ground contact, no penetration of sacred ground
Key Challenges: Heritage protection, temporary installation, dynamic structural loads, extreme weather exposure, VIP compliance
Outcome: 800 kg / 13‑person hydraulic lift installed in 2 weeks, removed in 1 week, fully compliant, and used annually by royalty, heads of state, and global audiences.
Set against the historic backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the world’s most famous annual events, held on the Castle Esplanade — a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year, it attracts over 200,000 visitors, international audiences, royalty, heads of state, and military representatives from across the globe.
The event operates on a seasonal cycle: a large temporary stadium is erected each May, used from July to September, then fully dismantled and stored until the following year.
iKONIC Lifts was approached directly by the event organisers and their agents to solve a unique problem: how to provide safe, luxury vertical transportation for VIPs without touching or disturbing the sacred ground below. The site is a protected historic burial ground, and planning rules strictly prohibited any fixing, penetration, or load transfer to the ground.
They chose iKONIC for our reputation in bespoke lift design, heritage compliance, and engineering solutions where standard products simply cannot work.

iKONIC Challenge: Lift Engineering for a Protected Landmark A Bespoke Temporary Passenger Lift
This was not a standard lift installation — it was a complex engineering project with constraints never before combined in one location. We were tasked with creating a world‑first passenger lift that met every requirement:
✅ No ground contact allowed — zero load or fixing to the protected burial ground
✅ Temporary but safe — annual assembly, use, dismantling, and storage alongside the stadium
✅ Cantilevered support — the entire lift structure had to be attached only to the temporary stadium stand
✅ Dynamic structural loads — the stadium moves under wind and weather; the lift had to move safely with it
✅ Extreme environment — exposed location with rapid weather changes, high winds, and variable temperatures
✅ Premium performance — smooth, reliable transport for royalty and high‑profile guests
✅ Full compliance — meet all UK lift safety regulations and heritage protection laws
Delivering Through Disruption
Originally scheduled for trial in 2020, the project was delayed twice due to the COVID‑19 pandemic. Despite this, our design team continued to refine the engineering model, and when the event returned in 2022, we were ready to deliver.
iKONIC Solution: Bespoke Modular Cantilever Lift for Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo
Our team combined detailed site surveys, advanced structural analysis, and innovative design to deliver a solution that had never been built before.
Step 1: Deep Site Analysis
We conducted multiple visits to map the exact position, measured the existing stadium structure, and analysed years of local weather and wind data — critical for engineering safety in such an exposed location. We built a full 3D structural model to understand exactly how the stadium behaved under load, wind, and temperature changes.
Step 2: World‑First Design
The result was a modular steel lift structure, engineered to cantilever entirely off the main stadium stand. This meant no weight, no fixings, and no disturbance to the ground below — fully satisfying heritage and planning requirements.

iKONIC Result: On Time, On Budget, World-Leading Lift Solution
In 2022, iKONIC Lifts completed manufacture, delivery, installation, and commissioning — delivering the project on time and on budget, and setting a new industry benchmark.
🔹 Installation Speed: Fully assembled, tested, and handed over in just 2 weeks
🔹 Removal Efficiency: Dismantled and cleared from site in 1 week — fitting perfectly within the event’s tight programme
🔹 Proven Safety: Verified via Finite Element (FE) Analysis and full load testing to confirm structural integrity
🔹 Reliability: Monitored 24/7 via New Lifts Elevision 4, with weekly maintenance to ensure zero downtime during performances
🔹 Heritage Compliance: 100% approval from planning and heritage bodies — no damage or disturbance to the protected site
Year After Year Performance
The lift is now a permanent part of the event’s infrastructure: installed every May, used throughout the season, dismantled in September, and stored locally ready for the next year. It remains the only passenger lift in the world installed in a World Heritage site without touching the ground.
