Private Residential Building | End Client Design Brief | Multi-million Pounds Renovation | Lift Design For Pre-Existing Lift Shaft

OUR CLIENT

A main contractor was working on a multi-million-pound renovation project, for a private residence in Belgravia, central London. To help them in the project, they required a reliable lift partner. Our company was referred to the contractor by a past client.

They required the removal of an old inefficient traction lift.

These were to be replaced with sustainable, high-quality equipment. They also had a very stringent design concept issued by the end client of what the lift needs to look like and achieve.

The passenger lift was required to serve five floors. Featuring a USB charger on the control panel, glass landing doors and bespoke lift car finishes. They also wished to make a feature out of the lift shaft itself, which was to be hand painted by an artist. iKONIC Lifts were hired by the client to specify equipment, supply, and install a solution for accessibility across the floors of the building. That must match the exact aesthetics that their client specified.

iKONIC CHALLENGE

After removing and disposing of the old lift equipment, the survey our lift expert completed found insufficient fixing points to handle the lift load. Due to part of the brief including the lift shaft being hand painted with bespoke black metallic paint, and LED mood lighting to enhance the metallic effect.

iKONIC would need to schedule time into the project to provide safe working access to the lift shaft, for an Artist and an Electrician.

As the property owner already had their design concept and had an image of the result in their mind, we provided many bespoke finish samples, to gain approval from the main contractor and client. As well as meeting very strict deadlines, with working hours limited to set times, due to the impact on other residential neighbours, all these factors had to be considered to ensure we met the deadline for the property owners to move in.

After we received delivery of the lift door frames, our project manager immediately noticed there had been a factory error because the doors arrived in the wrong colour.

iKONIC SOLUTION

Our lift consultant carried out a survey of the lift shaft, thus enabling the design and specification of the quality equipment necessary to fit the lift shaft and accommodate the design concept.

Working with the main contractor, we instructed where parts of the walls would need to be strengthened, allowing for appropriate mounting points for the equipment’s brackets that would be able to safely support the lift load.

As part of our collaboration with all third parties, we planned for engineers to be in attendance for safe access to the lift shaft for,

  • The artist to hand paint the lift shaft walls.
  • The electrician to install the bespoke LED mood lighting.

Using our contacts and extensive range of lift car finishes, we provided samples and examples to match the end users request for doors, car ceiling, car walls, skirtings, mirrors, control panels, both for the landing and for the lift car.

We left the lift car floor at the correct depth so that third parties could install it to match the landing floors.

To meet the many time constraints, we set our own strict schedule so as not to impact the construction team and nearby residence. As soon as the incorrect colour door frames were delivered, the project manager contacted a specialist to have them corrected promptly so as not to hinder our schedule.

iKONIC RESULT

iKONIC lifts installation engineers carried out the works to plan and timescales, safely.

The IKONIC Mars passenger lift was most suitable for the existing lift shaft and was adapted to incorporate the luxury finishes. In addition to the glass low iron framed doors, the client chose Mocca Brown Leather panelled walls, a crystal glass full height mirror, and COP and LOP in the same brassy finish as the Celine and skirtings.

Prior to the testing visit, our lift consultant checked the quality of the lift at the site. This was the first time they experienced smoother, quieter lift travel in an open shaft of such a unique design. As expected, the lift passed all relevant accreditations BS EN 81-20/50, BS EN 81-28, BS EN 81-73, and BS EN 81-58.

The result provides a great feature to the Belgravia building, allows access to all floors, and the hand painted lift shaft metallic effect is exposed through the glass landing doors, highlighted by the bespoke LED mood lighting on all floors, until the lift car is called. Fully meeting our brief, on time and budget.
