CASE STUDY: Lewisham Town Council
LEWISHAM TOWN COUNCIL
HIRO 720 GS
A spectacular install which defied all our expectations. IKONIC Lifts overcame every challenge seamlessly and the lift was up and running only 18 hours after the initial install.
Based in Catford and serving the large inner London borough of Lewisham, Lewisham Town Council is responsible for the maintenance and compliance of a number of buildings. IKONIC Lifts worked with Lewisham Borough Council extensively on five DDA upgrade projects over a three to four year period. Our experience and knowledge of disabled compliance lead the council to select us over a number of larger lift companies and our team of expert engineers automated several hundreds of doors and supplied and fitted numerous Disabled Access lifts across public buildings in the borough.
Lewisham Town Council was looking to improve access to the Catford Civic Suite at their central offices. It was fundamental for the council that the Suite was fully compliant and accessible for the local community and that safe evacuation was equally available in the event of a fire. The Council were looking for a company able to rise to the challenges that the project posed and provide a turn-key solution, installing a quality passenger lift which could service three floors.
THE CHALLENGE - Logistics
Logistics– Due to time constraints and the need for minimum disruption to the Council’s working day it was decided that the lift should be built in its own structure in Germany at our partner manufacturer HIRO’s factory. This meant transport of the large structure would be required through London and a crane install would be needed.
THE CHALLENGE - Pit Depth
Pit Depth – We discovered that the proposed lift location was sitting above historic foundations dating back to World War II. This posed a major challenge as the required pit depth could not be achieved.
THE CHALLENGE - Fire Evacuation
Fire Evacuation – The lift needed to be able to provide access throughout the year and fire evacuation in the event of an emergency.
OUR SOLUTION - The Lift
The Lift – We installed the HIRO 720 GS with 100kg capacity which was installed within its own self-contained lift structure. The lift also had a bespoke aluminium structure walk way linking the lift to the existing building.
OUR SOLUTION - Logistics
Logistics – The size of the crane and possible traffic impact meant the best solution was to obtain an order for the road closure of the A205 from Saturday 5pm to Sunday 5pm and have the South Circular re-routed for a period of 18 hours over a weekend. This enabled easy and safe transport of the lift and itself contained lift shaft.
OUR SOLUTION - Pit Depth
Pit Depth – The lift which had been proposed was outside the current key regulations for pit requirements. However due to our engineering expertise and Lift Cert accreditation’s we were able to apply for a derogation order from the Partner of Business Innovation and Skills, stating the case and the importance of the lift. This order was granted and the IKONIC Lifts team performed the entire installation including building work, construction and design.
OUR SOLUTION - Fire Evacuation
Fire Evacuation - An additional door to the rear was built in which activated in an emergency
The HIRO 720 lift was craned in to place safely and quickly with little impact to the council and was up and running only 18 hours later.
